Background of the Study
Nigeria’s vast geography and regional diversity necessitate robust road networks to promote economic integration. Expanding and modernizing road infrastructure is seen as a strategic instrument to bridge economic disparities between urban centers and rural areas. Recent government initiatives have focused on upgrading highways and constructing new roads to reduce travel time, lower transportation costs, and stimulate interregional trade (Adeniran, 2023). Improved connectivity can enhance market access, facilitate the efficient movement of goods, and foster greater socio-economic cohesion among regions (Afolabi, 2024). Empirical evidence indicates that regions benefiting from expanded road networks experience increased investments, higher trade volumes, and improved access to essential services such as education and healthcare (Ibrahim, 2025). However, challenges such as inadequate maintenance, funding gaps, and bureaucratic delays often undermine these potential benefits. This study examines how road network expansion influences economic integration by evaluating its effects on trade flows, investment patterns, and overall regional development. The research employs both quantitative measures (e.g., transit time, cargo volumes) and qualitative insights from local stakeholders to provide a holistic appraisal of infrastructure investments. Additionally, the study investigates the role of policy frameworks and administrative capacity in converting infrastructural improvements into economic gains. Ultimately, the goal is to generate evidence-based recommendations for policymakers to optimize road expansion initiatives and promote balanced economic development across Nigerian regions.
Statement of the Problem
Despite significant investments in road network expansion, many Nigerian regions continue to face challenges in achieving seamless economic integration. Persistent issues—such as deteriorating road conditions, uneven project implementation, and governance inefficiencies—result in increased travel times and higher operating costs, thereby limiting interregional trade (Uche, 2023). Urban centers often reap the benefits of improved connectivity, while rural and peripheral areas remain isolated, exacerbating regional inequalities (Afolabi, 2024). Furthermore, the absence of a coordinated maintenance and evaluation system leads to fragmented infrastructure that fails to support continuous economic exchange. Corruption and bureaucratic delays further diminish the impact of these investments (Ibrahim, 2025). These systemic shortcomings contribute to a significant gap between the projected benefits of road expansion and actual economic outcomes, ultimately hindering regional integration.
